Parathyroid Scan (with Tc99m Sestamibi)

Indication

Positive biochemical tests (elevated PTH and Ca++).

Procedure

30 mCi Tc-99m Sestamibi I.V., scans of the neck and the chest at 10 min, 2 hours and 3 hours (followed with SPECT, if needed).

Attention

In some cases correlation with thyroid scan is necessary.

Parathyroid adenoma, 10 minutes post Mibi IV.

Parathyroid adenoma, 10 minutes post Mibi IV.

Parathyroid adenoma, 2 hours post Mibi IV.

Parathyroid adenoma, 2 hours post Mibi IV. Retention of the tracer on the left side of the neck indicates presence of parathyroid adenoma.
