Bone Whole Body Scan using Tc99m - HDP (Oxidronate)
Indications
Survey for suspected secondary or primary malignant bone disease, Paget disease, or for investigation of inflammatory arthritis. Hip disease: avascular osteonecrosis (X-ray negative), loosening of hip prosthesis, infected hip prosthesis. Suspected fractures with normal X-rays: wrists, ribs, femoral neck, vertebra, stress fractures. Osteomyelitis.
Procedure
Injection of Tc99m - HDP I.V. with early views 2 min. later, then scan (whole body) 1.5-3 hours post injection (takes 20 min.). When necessary, study is followed with SINGLE PHOTON EMISSION COMPUTER TOMOGRAPHY (SPECT) for small lesions, which takes an additional 30 minutes.
PLEASE NOTE: Between injection and final scan patient MUST NOT have chemotherapy, radiotherapy or X-ray procedures involving injection or oral administration of contrast!
ATTENTION: For osteomyelitis and infected knee and hip prostheses dual Tc99m- HDP / Ga- 67 scans are recommended.
In Plasmocytoma bone marrow scan with Sestamibi is more sensitive investigation for bone infiltration.
