Biliary Scan using 99mTc DIDA (Diethylacetanilide-IDA)

Indications

Suspected acute cholecystitis. Evaluation of jaundice (adjunctive procedure). Evaluation of recurrent jaundice and pain post biliary surgery. Evaluation of biliary-enteric anastomosis. Detection of post-op leaks. Evaluation of enterogastric reflux. Evaluation of small bowel transit time.

In patients with suspected cholecystitis, if gallbladder fails to visualise within 40 minutes, a small dose of morphine (0.04mg/Kg = 2.8mg/70Kg) is given I.V. to prompt filling of the gallbladder by contraction of the sphincter of Oddi. The study is completed within 80 min. Gallbladder emptying can be investigated after a fatty meal.
